Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual Colonoscopy is the latest test for detecting cancer and polyps in the colon (large intestine). A multi-slice CT scanner creates a high-resolution, three-dimensional representation of the colon, allowing the radiologist to evaluate the entire length of the colon. The radiologist also evaluates the surrounding organs for abnormalities.

Why you should have this test?

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths in adults and the leading cause of death in non-smoking adults. Colon cancer can be prevented if polyps are detected and removed before they become cancerous.

Virtual Colonoscopy is a far less invasive alternative to conventional endoscopic colonoscopy. Using state-of-the-art imaging, radiologists are able to detect polyps without subjecting you to the risks, pain and inconvenience associated with conventional colonoscopy.

Virtual Colonoscopy is just as accurate as conventional colonoscopy for the detection of polyps 10mm and larger and can identify polyps as small as 3 to 4 mm. Since the exam is done using a multi-slice CT scanner, the radiologist  can evaluate some of the other abdominal organs as well.

What you will experience:

Carbon dioxide is introduced gently through a small flexible rubber tube placed at the end of the colon to inflate the colon so the walls are not touching. Since the gut quickly absorbs carbon dioxide, you will not have the discomfort of excess gas.

A CT scan is taken while you lie on your back, and once again on your stomach. This allows any fluid in the colon to move from one side to the other, creating the best possible pictures of the entire colon. A virtual colonoscopy typically lasts less than 20 minutes.

Who should have this test:

Patients over the age of 50 years or who have an increased risk of colon cancer should be screened for colon cancer every 3 to 5 years.

How you should prepare:

You will be given a list of foods to avoid two days prior to your exam. The day before the exam, you will consume the meal kit (given to you earlier). On the evening before the exam, you will take magnesium citrate and stool softeners to evacuate the bowels.

Most patients report that the directions and preparations are easy to follow and do not interfere with normal life activities.

After your exam:

A board-certified radiologist from Suburban Radiologic Consultants will interpret your virtual colonoscopy images and the findings will be sent to your physician. Your physician will contact you to share and discuss the results.

Cost:

Most insurance plans consider this a non-covered service, but check with your insurance company.

The charge for Virtual Colonoscopy is $850. We accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover and personal checks. Payment is expected at the time the service is rendered.
