Total Body Analysis

Total Body Analysis with the DEXA is the ideal way for the serious athlete, the person monitoring or beginning a program of exercise or weight loss, or anyone curious or concerned about their health to receive a quick, painless, accurate and confidential assessment of their body’s composition.

For Total Body Analysis, the DEXA scanner operates on the principle known as “Differential Absorption,” that is utilizing the fact that varying types of human tissue absorb x-ray at varying rates.

Using an X-Ray beam of constant and consistent energy levels, the scanner’s receptors are able to mathematically compute the rate of X-Ray absorption at millions of points throughout a person’s body.  Literally, it measures down to the atomic level.  Given this data, the computer is able to, based upon those varying rates of X-Ray absorption, differentiate between types of tissue that comprise the body as well as determine their various quantities.  The scanner classifies a body’s tissue as either skeletal, lean or fat.  It is capable of determining tissue content within a person’s body down to the gram.

The scan itself is simple, painless and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.  To prepare for the test, DO NOT TAKE ANY VITAMINS OR MINERALS THE DAY OF YOUR TEST. The results are available almost immediately.  The printed scan report includes a complete breakdown of body tissue content, as well as the tissue composition of various regions the body, for example, the abdomen, arms and legs.  The report includes not just a person’s individual numeric values, but also a comparison to what is considered to be “average” for that person’s demographic profile.

This test is generally not covered by insurance companies. Please contact your local provider for cost information.
